I think it's a good general rule for your backup to be different enough that something like a graphics update or Windows update doesn't impact both machines at the same time. The whole idea is just to spread the risk, so diversity welcome. I don't know if there is any specific rules for how updates are pushed out, but I have a Lenovo, an Acer, and a desktop I have built and they all seem to get Windows updates at different times.
TTU doesn't endorse any particular brand, but I used Lenovo for a while and I'm comfortable with them. That would be my personal choice (love their keyboards), but there are plenty of options out there that are just fine for what we need them for.
